Although the idea of implementing\u00a0a salon employee of the month program might stem from a desire to inspire positivity and motivation, it can, unfortunately, backfire and undervalue your team\u2019s hard work. As a leader in this already competitive industry, that&#8217;s just not something you can afford. Let me tell you this: salon employee of the month programs have their pitfalls and can lead to unhealthy work environments.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not careful, the same person always gets the shine.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul class=\"ol1\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"ol1\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who don\u2019t get recognition for their work can easily feel demotivated\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"><em>(Am I a loser if I don&#8217;t win? What about my hard work?).<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ol1\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"ol1\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you measure success? Do you have a new KPI every month?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ol1\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"ol1\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you guarantee the motivation of the whole team by having such a program in place. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you make sure that a different employee gets recognised every month, fundamentally, what\u2019s the point of the program?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The Pitfalls Of A Salon Employee Of The Month Program<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">It&#8217;s essential to recognise hard work and dedication, but at what cost? Is having an employee celebrated each month the best way to do it? In my experience, it tends to lead to employee competition and a shift in focus (recognition over performance), and so I have yet to find a salon or spa where such a program is implemented\u00a0successfully. In fact, according to\u00a0Bersin by Deloitte, &#8220;organisations<em> with recognition programs that are highly effective at enabling employee engagement had 31% lower voluntary turnover rates than organisations with ineffective recognition programs.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">To allow both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phorest.com\/features\/salon-rostering-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">individual and business growth<\/a>, your managerial leadership plan should take into account the creation of individual development plans. This will help you develop each staff member&#8217;s strengths and abilities. These programs do a much more effective job of<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0recognising hard work. Plus, they value everyone in their own ways while keeping the team motivation high. If you don&#8217;t quite know where to start, you can take inspiration from the two ideas below:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A bouquet of flowers<\/strong>\u00a0or an unexpected gift voucher always has a positive impact on the person who receives it and doesn&#8217;t undermine everyone else.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><strong>Send a newsletter<\/strong>\u00a0highlighting someone&#8217;s fantastic achievement or post an incredible review on social media. In fact, I recently saw a newsletter mentioning that a staff member had passed her exams; I&#8217;ll tell you what: as customers, we love seeing that!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Encouraging every little positive step is possibly one of the most important aspects of team motivation and will bring high value to those plans that you spent time creating. Remember this: it&#8217;s all about consistency!<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Related |\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phorest.com\/blog\/management-styles-salons-spas\/\" rel=\"noopener\">6 Management Styles And How They Apply To Salons And Spas<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p3\">What Should Such A Plan Include?<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Training Plan<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\">What training do you have planned for the year ahead?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Individual Targets<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\">Targeted to each staff member\u2019s ability bearing in mind that they will grow month-on-month (within what&#8217;s reasonable and good for the business).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Retail Focus<\/strong><br \/>\nHow will you ensure that your employee becomes impressive at retail sales? Will you invest in training, soft skills, consultations?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Personal Motivation<\/strong><br \/>\nYou&#8217;ve heard these:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>\u201cI want to learn a new skill.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>&#8220;I want to do something completely different.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><em>&#8220;I am motivated by money; I want to open my own salon.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">As an employer, the more I know about each of my team members, the more I can target their motivation:<em> &#8220;If you perform, I will help you with what you truly want.&#8221;<\/em> Think of it as a win-win situation!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Performance<\/strong><br \/>\n<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">I<\/span>t is crucial to track your staff&#8217;s performance. This part of the plan should be performance related, so we need to track figures and KPIs, but most importantly, give feedback and ensure they continue performing. Meaning that you might, occasionally, have to deal with underperformance. A lot of issues come from when we, as managers, are not consistent with the tracking of employee performance. If the targets are reasonable and achievable, then the expectations are set. From then on, supportive leadership will be the key to ensuring that they become high achievers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Final Thoughts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">For those who follow my work as a commercial trainer and coach, you will know that I am obsessed with clear communication. Empower your staff by making them <\/span><span class=\"s1\">aware of their personal performance; do it in one-to-one meetings. During<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0team meetings, recognise each staff&#8217;s hard work and perhaps highlight someone on your team who has had a particularly good month.
