You might ask them about their marital status for ‘marketing’ reasons. So for instance, you could create a client category for married clients which you can then use for filtering marketing messages. Keep in mind though that you have to tell clients why you are asking them about their marital status, and that one day, they might make a ‘subject access request,’ in which case you’ll have to hand them over all the data you have on them – including all notes you’ve ever taken. So don’t ever write anything down that you might not want them to see.
