25 Salon Conversation Starters To Use With New Clients

Being a stylist, therapist or a hairdresser might require you to put on an extroverted persona, but that doesn’t mean you always feel at ease meeting people. That being said, your chair is a special place. A place that makes people look and feel like a million dollars. And according to a survey we conducted amongst New York salon-goers, 65% of women favour a chat with their hair or beauty therapist. So if you’re more of an introvert, conversation starters can sometimes come in quite handy.

It’s not all that hard to get clients to open up. All you need is the right questions: some that are casual and others, that spark interesting chats. As time goes on, you’ll naturally build upon those initial chats, and as your relationship with your client grows, so will their trust in you.

Like Marianne Mychaskiw highlights in one of her InStyle articles, “the role of our hairstylist can get blurred with that of our therapist—a point we often forget until we’re midway through rehashing all the gory details of last week’s Tinder date gone awry during a double-process colour treatment.”

While some topics are great to discuss, others are safer to avoid. Award-winning hairstylist Claudio Lazo recommends “following the same standards as you would when meeting your boyfriend’s parents for the first time.” In other words, to steer clear of:

  1. Politics
  2. Religion
  3. Finances

Your clients come in for an experience, and getting them to talk about something is known to put people uncomfortable won’t do you, or your business any good. Keep your conversation starters light and redirect the mood if needed!
