Martin Reeves: How to build a business that lasts 100 years

In this 15-minute presentation, Martin Reeves questions what it takes for a business to last throughout the years. He challenges how we think about business and explains how we can apply six principles from living organisms to build resilient businesses. Companies who don’t crash in the face of change: ones that grow from it. He puts emphasis on why we need to rejuvenate our ability to think biologically.

So let’s not just think about short-term performance. Every company I know spends plenty of timethinking about the central question of strategy: How good is our competitive game? Knut Haanaes: Two reasons businesses fail – and how to avoid them

Linda Hill: How to manage for collective creativity

Harvard professor Linda Hill’s TED Talk is all about the secret to leading innovation, unlocking the creativity hidden inside daily work. Hill studies collective genius, or, the way great companies and leaders empower creativity from many. This is a 10-minute MUST WATCH talk if your next goal is to create a salon culture of initiative : any more of my words would take away from her amazing presentation.

Regina Hartley: Why the best hire might not have the perfect resume

Next up, “Why the best hire might not have the perfect resume”, by Regina Hartley. So the title is quite self-explanatory. The speaker, also a human resources manager at UPS, explains why she always gives a job candidate who has fought through difficulty a chance. She believes that those who confront adversity and come out strong from it are the ones that are most likely to be passionate and find a purpose in your business. Will she be able to convince you?

Shawn Achor: The happy secret to better work

Make sure your attention is undivided for this one because it’s fast-paced. Funny, sure! But fast-paced. In this TED Talk, psychologist Shawn Achor argues that we shouldn’t have to work hard in order to be happy. In fact, he believes the exact opposite: happiness inspires us to be more productive. And that’s exactly what have in mind when we say you should focus on team building, on ways to create a salon culture of initiative. Happy employees, happy days.

If you can raise somebody’s level of positivity in the present,then their brain experiences what we now call a happiness advantage, which is your brain at positive performs significantly better than at negative, neutral or stressed. Your intelligence rises, your creativity rises, your energy levels rise. – Shawn Achor

Tom Wujec: Build a tower, build a team

Ever heard of the design “marshmallow” challenge? Well, the idea behind it is to have teams of four build the tallest free-standing structure out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string and a marshmallow. Oh, and the marshmallow has to be on top. Forcing people to collaborate, Tom Wujec believes that the challenge provides a shared experience and a common language between individuals. It helps identify teams that work well together, but also the underlying truths as to why some teams aren’t working as well as they should. Interesting point of view, I must say! But if it works, you’ve taken 15 minutes (maybe) and observations about your team that might have taken up to a year to realise without the experiment. I say it’s worth the try.

Angela Lee Duckworth: Grit, The power of passion and perseverance

In this short 6-minute TED Talk, Angela Lee Duckworth explains her theory of “grit” as a predictor of success. She believes that passion and perseverance are what’s most important if one wants to follow through on very long-term goals.

We need to take our best ideas, our strongest intuitions, and we need to test them. We need to measure whether we’ve been successful, and we have to be willing to fail, to be wrong, to start over again with lessons learned. -Angela Lee Duckworth

We hope you enjoyed our second selection and we left with plenty of ideas to transpose in your salon. As opposed to having a team just working away one day at the time, try building a cohesive unit. One that accepts collective responsibility for the outcomes and growth of your salon.
