We can’t stress it enough: to make the most of December and January, you need to plan your marketing, social media and events in advance. Last month, our toolkit was all about getting your salon ready for the festive season, build brand awareness and increase retail sales, all of which you can check out here. Our December salon marketing ideas kit, however, is focused on content and event planning. What do we mean by that? We’re going to give you the tools you need to help you plan ahead and avoid experiencing a January slump.
Your December salon marketing ideas toolkit includes post-X-mas SMS & Email templates, a social media calendar planner and Facebook covers to which you can add your branding!

Targeted Marketing Campaigns
December is hectic – clients are flooding through your doors. But then comes January and it’s like many of your clients suddenly forget to book their regular appointments and your salon is left with quieter times. Some might even struggle to fill in slots. If you’re not quite familiar with targeted marketing campaigns, here’s the time to learn.
SMS & Email
Your targeting for January (assuming you’re all ahead and have your December SMS & Email campaigns planned out already) should be all around these themes:
> Reconnecting with clients who haven’t been in a while
> Specials promotions (make sure they don’t undervalue your business)
> New Year related promotions
With emails, you can be way more flexible. While people tend to prefer short emails, at least you don’t have to limit yourself to 160 characters.

Phorest Clients Extra: Filter Options & Client ReConnect
If you are a Phorest client, you’ll be happy to know that you can easily target clients when sending out SMS and email campaigns. Your filters are accessible from the second tab when you create your SMS or email. See the screenshot below.
Also, have you tried the Client ReConnect feature on your system yet? If not, it’s the perfect time to get familiar with it. Come January, you’ll see that this tool will fill in your appointment book in no time and with little to no effort on your part.
This industry-first benefit is specifically designed to track when your clients are due for their regular appointments and lets you know when they’re at risk of not coming back, making it easy to target these said customers with SMS & email campaigns.
Social Media & Events
Being active on social media is always going to help. But where most people have a hard time, is finding the time to make the updates or lacking inspiration in terms of what to post.
This is when a weekly social media content calendar comes in handy. For each day of the week, decide how many and what pieces of content will be shared with your audience. Make sure you’re not repeating posts several times in a row! Doing this will ensure you stay consistent and purposeful – resulting in overall better engagement.
Oh, and yes, you’re in luck: this December salon marketing ideas toolkit includes a Salon/Spa social media content calendar! Plan away!
Celebrate The New Year In Style!
This is an easy one: a new year calls for celebrations! Here are 2 ideas:
> Offering complimentary morning mimosas during the first week of January
> Organising a New Year’s Eve event with special promotional vouchers only redeemable in January
If you’re into organising a full-on event, check out Gillian Moore’s (from MD of Fuschia Make-Up) event planning tips right here – while it’s about makeup promotions, planning a New Year’s event will require the same steps!

Extra December Salon Marketing Ideas
Monday, December 12th, 2016: “Gingerbread House” Day
Another day, another excuse to celebrate!
If you have time (and baking skills!) this year, your salon could celebrate Gingerbread House Day. The concept is simple: a giant gingerbread is made, and you bring it in your salon for your clients to get a yummy little treat that day!
Friday, December 16th, 2016: “Ugly Christmas Sweater” Day
This annual day was initially launched 5 years ago and isn’t just what you think of it as – an excuse to parade in your vintage Christmas sweaters. The Rudolph-s and Frosty The Snowman-s actually serve a whole other purpose: raising funds to combat premature death among children from easily preventable diseases.
In saying this, a fun thing you could do is to get every salon/spa employee to wear their best old Christmas sweater on the day. Invite clients to vote for their favourite sweater by donating the amount they think it’s worth! As for the donation, my recommendation to you is to pick a local charity of your choosing. 🙂
