Data Shows Retail Is The Main Driver Of Salons’ December Revenue

Any salon owner will tell you that December is the busiest month of the year, but what exactly does that look like?

We’ve run the numbers from over 6,000 salons in the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, Finland and Germany, to see just how important the December madness is to salons, and found that retail is the main driver of the month’s success for salons.

Retail sales drive December boost for salons, bringing 107% more revenue than rest of year

According to averages from our data, salons make over 10% of their annual revenue in December alone. While services bring in an additional 13% in revenue in December compared to the average for the other months of the year, it’s retail sales that really provide the massive uptick in the festive month.

Salons make an additional 107% in total retail revenue in December compared to the rest of the year. A 28% boost in the number of products sold brings in 27% more product revenue, while a 450% jump in gift card sales brings 508% more gift card revenue than the rest of the year.

Our CEO, Ronan Perceval, commented: “It’s no wonder salon owners, managers, stylists, therapists and everyone else who makes a salon run like clockwork are completely exhausted by the time New Year rolls around, cramming 12% more completed services into the busy month compared to the rest of the year, with 9% more clients walking through their doors.

But there are only so many appointment slots in the month, and only so fast your stylists and therapists can work. If you really want to take advantage of the December rush, you need to market your retail and gift card promotions to your customers throughout December – both in-salon and via your email and SMS marketing campaigns.”

The Marketing Suite in Phorest Salon Software contains a host of email and SMS marketing templates, as well as festive stock photos you can use to get the word out about your Christmas retail specials.
