Learning to Laugh at Your Business Blunders

One of the biggest things that I have spoken about with regard to the renovations is a need to have a sense of humour. There are so many horror stories when we start a project like this. People will line up to tell you what not to do. But, you know what, you should do it anyway. So what if things go wrong, you can laugh at them later. At least you know that you tried your best.

One of the moments in my renovation experience that still stays with me, is hilarious now. But, at the time it seemed like a complete disaster. I’m telling you this story to illustrate how the biggest disaster can be comic relief after a suitable amount of time has passed!

Basically what happened was that I was having my evening bath a few doors down from the new salon. I was trying to relax when I got a call to come to the salon as soon as possible. I was a bit worried because my boyfriend was there alone trying to put up a ceiling and he wouldn’t be one to normally ask for help. I jumped out of the bath, threw on some clothes, and popped on some sunglasses (no time for makeup!) and ran down to the salon.

It was a disaster. We spent ages trying to hoist a massive piece of plasterboard to the ceiling. When we finally thought we had it we took a step back only for the entire thing to collapse to the ground. Even the acro’s that were holding up the plasterboard fell down.

At the time this was not funny, my boyfriend ended up picking up one of the acros and throwing it like a javelin across the room in frustration. He’s normally very calm so that was quite alarming!

At the time, it seemed like the end of the world, the ceiling wouldn’t go up, it had fallen down after hours of work and my boyfriend had seemingly lost it. But it wasn’t: now it’s just another funny story to tell people. It doesn’t matter what happens, you will cope, it will get better and you’ll eventually get where you are going.
